QUINCY CAREER CENTER WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Career Directions:  Explore a new career if you are changing a career or if you do not know what you would like to do.  Examine life and work values and complete assessment tool to assist exploring a new career.
Cover Letter Writing:  A good cover letter is crucial for anyone looking for work, since it is often your initial contact with a company.  Learn how to organize and write an effective cover letter.
Creating your Ideal Job:  Exposes customers to “Job visualization” and techniques identifying what you want and how to get there.  Guest Instructor.
E-Learning:  Need to upgrade knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel or learn how to use Quick Books or another software application.  Sign up for this workshop and acquire a license for online tutorials and start the learning process at your own pace.  Must be computer literate and have an email address.
E-Mail and Attachments:  Learn how to attach files to email messages and how to copy and paste files onto online applications.  Also, learn how to use the “Hot Jobs” list.  Must have an email address to participate in this workshop. 
How t
o Search for Federal Jobs:  Learn the Ins and outs of navigating the Federal Job System.
Internet Job Search: This lesson will provide customers knowledge of various job search tools.  Familiarizes customers with the steps necessary to do internet job search successfully as well as tricks to navigating job search portals.  Items covered include the hot job list, jobquest, and job search engines. 
Interview Basics:  Includes practical pointers on marketing yourself effectively during the interview.  Learn how to market your skills, review difficult interview questions and feel more confident in your next interview.
Introduction to Linked In:  Introduction to largest professional network.  Linked In connects you to trusted contacts and helps you exchange knowledge, ideas, and opportunities.
Introduction to MACIS: (Mass Career Information System)  Discover how to navigate this online system for current information on occupations, assessment tools and education and training.
Introduction to PC’s:  This is a two part workshop.  Each workshop consists of a 3 hour commitment.  .  Covers the basics of computers, how to navigate Microsoft Office, the Internet, and information stored and accessed on the computer.
Job Club:  Group meets for 6 consecutive Mondays.  Must commit to all 6 sessions.  Learn how to gain a competitive edge over other job seekers applying for positions you want.
Networking:  This workshop focuses on the process of networking and how to market yourself using your connections.
Résumé CritiquePlease bring 15 photocopies of your completed résumé and the facilitator along with participants will critique résumé providing valuable feedback. 
Résumé Development:  This workshop identifies fundamentals of résumé writing including formats.  It concentrates on the accomplishment statement and the concept of marketing yourself through the résumé.  Learn up to date rules of résumés and how to connect your skills to a future position.  
Salary Negotiation:  Learn how to negotiate your next salary. 
SBA Seminar:  Gain a better understanding of the various small business administration programs and services available to prospective or current entrepreneurs who need assistance starting or expanding their business.    
Surviving the Current Recession: Workshop will provide an understanding of your options with mortgages, savings plans, IRSs, 401K's, 403b's, and existing retirement plans.
Tips for Mature Workers:  Gain a greater understanding of potential age related biases which may impact one’s job search and discuss how to use your strengths and skills to your advantage.

Job Search Workshops

Career Center Seminar–This seminar is designed to educate customers on the many services of the Center and how to access these services.

Career Directions– Career exploration workshop.

Creating Your Ideal Job New–Exposes customers to “Job Visualization” and techniques identifying what you want and how to get there!

E-Learning S2 – This new exciting self-paced tutorial offers: computer
software applications. Prerequisite: Must have a valid e-mail  address and have a basic understanding of computers and the internet

Federal Job Search Workshop New  Learn the ins and outs of navigating the Federal job system.

Internet Job Search S3 – Learn the basics of Internet job searching

Interviewing - Includes practical pointers on  marketing yourself effectively during the interview Practice Option-after attending seminar, schedule an appointment to “Practice” interviewing techniques

Job Seeking Strategies -  This workshop discusses the numerous advertised and unadvertised methods to obtain employment as well as the most effective way to use each method.

Mature Workers Job Search Tips- Participants will gain an a greater understanding of potential age-related biases, both internal and external, which may impact on one's job search and specific strategies to aid participants in developing a successful job search

Networking For Your Job Search - Workshop will provide proven techniques to find the hidden job market - the unadvertised job openings.

Résumé & Cover Letter Seminar - Participants will learn key concepts about Résumé writing including formats, summaries and accomplishment statements. Also, will discuss cover letters and other correspondence

Résumé Critique Prerequisite:  Bring 11 copies of your "typed" Résumé to share with other participants.  Receive constructive criticism from workshop facilitator to ensure that your Résumé illustrates the strengths and skills needed in today's job market.

Salary Negotiations - Learn negotiating techniques as well as how to negotiate salary based on the "Market Value" of a position.

Small Business Administration Overview – Understanding of SBA programs and services available to prospective or current entrepreneurs needing assistance in starting or expanding a businesses.

Surviving The Current Recession - Workshop will provide an understanding of your options with mortgages, savings plans, IRSs, 401K's, 403b's, and existing retirement plans.

Veteran Networking Group (VetNet) – Job search networking/support group for prior military service personnel.

Computer Workshops

Point & Click Basics S1 - An introduction to computers for beginners and for those who are in need of basic computer skills

Point & Click Review S1 – A review of the fundamentals learned in Point & Click Basics. 

Introduction to Word Processing S2 - Learn the basics of word processing Prerequisite: Attended Point & Click or demonstrated ability/knowledge of basic computer skills. Must know how to use a mouse.

Microsoft Word Basics S3 - Introduces users to the basic features  utilized when working with a document in Microsoft Word.  Prerequisite: Attended Intro word processing or demonstrated knowledge of MS Word Basics
Intro to Excel S4 – Learn the basics on how to create spreadsheets. Prerequisite: Knowledge of MS Word and Must know how to use a mouse
Self-Directed Resource Room Services
Mavis Beacon-Typing Tutor: A self-paced tutorial program for those who need to learn basic keyboarding skills or for those who want to increase their typing speed and accuracy. 

Support for Individuals with Disabilities:  Auxiliary aids or services are available upon request to individuals with disabilities.  Speak with Job Specialist for assistance.
WinWay Résumé: WinWay Résumé® is a “point and click” software program with thousands of options for creating your Résumé.

Reference Library
The library includes an extensive collection of subjects authored by experts in the employment field.  Reference materials cover a wide range of job search topics addressing employment strategies and issues encountered by job seekers.  Books are for use in the career center.
